A Move for the Ages

I thought it would be interesting to finally get to penning down my thoughts about something that I’ve long wanted to get to, but couldn’t get to because I simply couldn’t find a block of time to do it.

But here I am today, and I want to take a closer look at this question that I’ve been asked since I moved to India several years ago. And that question is this:

“Why did you move to India when so many Indians want to move abroad?”

I’ve never thought that this question was a judgement about my choices or my actions but accepted it as a curiosity that many may have about me, a foreigner who chose to move to India. If it seems unusual to you now, just read on, and you’ll soon understand why!

I have three reasons why I moved to India, and I hold each of them very close to my heart.

Reason 1

I’ve always felt that India is the land of opportunities. In a lot of “developed” countries the structures have been laid down and the foundations have been set. I feel that India has a long way to go as a country: there are avenues of growth everywhere and the structures for it are still being formed. I would love to be a part as well as witness this journey as it grows towards newer heights with each and every year - it offers a level of excitement unlike any other country!

Reason 2

I’ve always enjoyed and appreciated intensity of all kinds, and India is definitely the kind of place where I can experience this intensity everywhere! There is an intensity in everything here. I simply love the intensity of the weather, be it heat or rain, the intensity of the colours - houses in bright pink or powder blue, or the sarees, which come in a myriad of shades across the rainbow! I love the intensity of the food - its spiciness and its masalas and it's in-your-face attitude; I love the intensity of noise, the wedding bands, large discos, and even the temples and mosques - everything about the country seems intense and I absolutely love it!

Reason 3

The last reason I enjoy living in India so much is the speed of change! I’m the kind of person who loves changes - I tend to get bored very easily. And here things change so fast that it’s constantly feeding my desire for change! Although last on the list, this reason opens up possibilities for me that I get to experience as someone who lives in India - and because everything keeps changing, there are more and more things to discover every day, and there are endless opportunities here for that reason!

So that’s a basic overview of some of the reasons why I’m still in India and have no plans at all to leave any time soon! It really is a beautiful place, and if you’re someone who enjoys a fast-paced life with a lot of intensity, you’ll absolutely love it here!

And if I’m being completely honest, I’m still discovering more and more reasons to be here everyday. This list looks a certain way today, but it may have many, many more reasons two to five years from now.

No matter what’s to come, I’m convinced I will enjoy my stay here, and I hope that some people who are considering moving to India will decide to move here for sure after reading this blog!
