How my Purpose revealed itself

In 2019, during the first lock-down, when I was reading the bestseller by Giulia Enders on the human gut, I had an “Aha!” moment as I realized the startling similarities between nurturing soil and nurturing people.

If you’re wondering at the connection between a book on the gut and on my twin passions - coaching and farming, allow me to elaborate. As the farmer in me began to take shape, I got deeper into permaculture and soil health and began to read articles to understand the complexities of soil micro microbiology, the mycorrhizal network, and the importance of soil health for plants. Believe me, there’s a whole universe out there beneath the earth that we see.

Around the same time as I was reading Giulia’s book, I participated in a 21-day meditation program, of which one day was dedicated to discovering personal purpose. As I looked within, my personal purpose all of a sudden revealed itself. The words were suddenly there and have not left me since then. It was about nurturing soil and nurturing people, and in that order.

Now, Giulia’s book dives into the human gut and talks about the human microbiome and microbes. In fact, that was the first time I came across the term ‘human microbiome’. I learnt that the wholesome and non-stop activity of the gazillions of microbiota influences mental and physical health conditions. In a flash, the parallels between soil health and human health dawned on me. Both my personal purposes were indeed interconnected.

The soil is healthy only if its living organisms are healthy. And the human is healthy only if the gut biome is healthy. Does the similarity strike you too?

As an aside - many diseases we hear of today can be traced to the imbalance in the human microbiome. “We are what we eat”, is a truth that we need to recognize as the food that we have directly affects our gut health.

Coming back to the topic, as a Coach & Mentor, my mission is to nurture people and make them resilient with affirmative thoughts and sharp insights about themselves. As they strengthen themselves from within, they can be more productive at work and, in a manner of speaking, harvest their own good.

As a Regenerative Farmer, my goal is to nurture soil with inputs that enrich and help it produce healthy plants. At the core of both, as you can see, is nurturing – the secret sauce that helps the earth and its people give their best.

What do you feel? Do you think that nurturing is the common good between soil and people? Do share your thoughts.
